When we think of the Civil War, we think it is possible to input places and actors: Bull Run, Antietam, Gettysburg, Shiloh; President Lincoln, General Lee, the Federation of Trade Unions. To art with the ongoing conflict in the North and South 1861-1865 associate seems unusual, but it is what the art of the Civil War and America, a new exhibition at the Smithsonian American Art Museum has asked us to do.

Consider some of the greatest artists of the time were influenced by the war between the states. Winslow Homer and Albert Bierstadt, for example, are two American artists, has become known for his paintings of landscapes, some of which contained high symbolic allusions to war. 57 paintings and 18 photographs collection - places, landscapes by Homer, Bierstadt, and some of his contemporaries in the context to see this exposure on 75 stations. The Civil War and American Art also discusses the paintings of artists from the battlefield produced on both sides of the war; the harsh reality of shown in vintage photos of Antietam and Gettysburg massacre battle; and questions of slavery and reconstruction.
Winslow Homer and Albert Bierstadt
The most famous artists appear on the Civil War and American Art's Winslow Homer, who is represented in this exhibition with 13 paintings. Although the artist of the 19th century is known for his scenes of New England, especially painting, inspired by the coast of Maine known, Homer also spent time with soldiers of the Union, capturing the work and rest as they traveled to places the battle behind enemy lines. prisoners before the scene is a civilized Union Confederate soldiers under POWs. The sunny side, a portrait sitting of Black Hat stock, is another poignant work of Homer.
Also Bierstadt, show their paintings, bookends. His Guerrilla 1862 is complete, Union soldiers waiting for the prey of the Confederacy, while Yosemite Valley, California, a huge canvas, painted in 1865 shows the scenery of the West is known for beer city. Since the beginning of the war, a new beginning between the United States, Bierstadt images tell a story of how the works of art in their works.
Other Artists
In addition to Homer and Bierstadt, most of the paintings in the exhibition come from almost a dozen artists, including Sanford Robinson Gifford, Conrad Wise Chapman, Frederic Edwin Church, and Eastman Johnson.
Gifford Twilight in the Catskill Mountains, Bivouac of the Seventh Regiment, Arlington Heights, Virginia, and Fort Federal Hill at sunset, Baltimore, orange paintings are beautiful, referring to the burnt landscapes and the stresses that the current war is rabies.
Conrad Wise Chapman, the well-known artist in painting, during his time in the Confederate Army, carries scenes of everyday activity along the Charleston Harbor.
Church painted landscapes full of symbolism. As Bierstadt, the church is shown at the beginning and at the end of the show. Its small scale Our Banner in the Sky from 1861 is the Union Flag in the clouds orange and red sunset. Later means some of the great paintings of the church, as the rainy season in tropical rain a new dawn. However, there are concerns in many of the sights of the Church, especially in Cotopaxi, 1862 portrait of an eruption of the volcano in Ecuador, which symbolize the rage on the central issue of slavery as a "moral Volcano" by Frederick Douglass in a speech in year 1861.
While the church raised the issue of slavery through the landscape painting Eastman Johnson has created several memorable portraits of slave life. His life of blacks in the South from 1859 - two years before the start of the Civil War - is a frank comment mestizaje plantations A Walk for Freedom -. Fugitive Slave March 2, 1862, provides an escape from the slave heroic horse and leaves no doubt that Johnson is sympathetic to the anti-slavery cause. Johnson has some other remarkable life paintings of the Civil War, including the windy melancholy and Girl I Left Behind Me
Two other paintings report be seen in the Civil War and American Art Julian Scott A Confederate Solider and Thomas Moran Slave Hunt, Dismal Swamp, Virginia.

The following Brooklyn
Brooklyn, I love you, but I fall. Instead, his name is "continue" mentioned all the time with the word behind it, and it really is starting to irritate me.
Brooklyn What's this? Creative Capital in the shade of a big city? A place where an organic shop, the vinyl records they can be sold? Men with beards? These 39 things? Is back catalog Brooklyn Jay Z and a brand new luxury sports complex or a quarter in a variety of hip-hop songs? Maybe Brooklyn is a Woody Allen movie? To reduce the number of baseball fans from, the name means Brooklyn Dodgers, the team that the name of a pejorative used against the residents of Manhattan and later snootier furious team for you and carries on its base local fans, he moved to Los Angeles (the antithesis of Brooklyn).
And, of course, this beautiful Brooklyn Bridge. One of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States opened the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883. Though certainly go through it, the Brooklyn Bridge is the best for biking or walking to you in the mathematical labyrinth of lines that look up to support it.
During the last decade, Brooklyn has become shorthand for a city in the know and is on the radar. "Brooklyn", a county or a city on the rise - come as soon as you can still pay and / or more street cred.
No wonder that many cities in the United States (or local tourist offices in these cities publications) will sell as the "next Brooklyn." Brooklyn has cachet. Brooklyn is a trademark. Brooklyn IN.
The following cities are the latest to as the "Brooklyn Next" or be called "new Brooklyn", but it will not happen. Why? Well, for starters, they have the advantage that they are blessed with a view of one of the most beautiful but also, these cities have their own charm city views paraphrase a good last word Oscar Wilde (in Brooklyn in 1882, lectured the world - .. 1 year, before he be the same fees, cities, Brooklyn is already taken the bridge on the left).
The next Brooklyn?

The Ugly American States
In a beauty contest between the states of California and Connecticut, California certainly always win. But that does not mean Connecticut, as one of the ugliest U.S. states in a recent article in the SF Examiner Travel International has admirable qualities.
As a firm believer in "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and in favor of giving the benefit of doubt, I want to bring to the defense of Connecticut, Delaware, Kansas, Nevada, and Oklahoma, and find some beauty in every
Delaware
I'm curious, with Bob Ecker, the article's author, reviewer, Delaware is one of the ugliest state in the Union agree, because often I look at the "first state" as nothing more than a few toll booths representing Congress. But if I Delaware goal, it is often a pleasure. A city trip to a summer of Lewes, by the Dutch settled 1631 days means an afternoon swim in the bay, antique shops and a stop at one of the many country stands Delaware East.
Nevada
Ecker Nevada lists "with a heavy heart", but in fact valid for admission to the ugliest because of its history as core evidence and arguments of the relentless geography. In fact, improving the neon of Las Vegas has a pleasant aesthetic to the eyes of some but. I can not imagine ugly can assert a state which part of the Lake Tahoe adding to the list.
Connecticut
All negative impressions Connecticut especially enjoy of my friends in New York and Massachusetts, both so in love with himself to separating this strip of land States. Although Connecticut urban centers are not much to see, I'm combining a lover of its colonial architecture and its maritime heritage well to Mystic Seaport. Ecker also hate Hartford, but the head of the outbreak of the State Capitol building in neo-Gothic style, which exceeds far beyond the small stature of the state.
Oklahoma
The argument against Oklahoma Ecker shows almost the opposite: "There is another level of infinity, the plain lonely Oklahoma breathlessly," I can imagine that a visitor to a mountainous country his sight. in Oklahoma for the first time and is impressed by the "infinite triviality." Oklahoma also has the most American Indian tribal headquarters of the United States. If modern reservations are just a thing of beauty when you get the opportunity a strain on a holiday, colorful and emotional state that you love ever to visit the Southwest show.
Kansas
Of all the countries on the list in the top five, Kansas is the one I know least. But I could not find some poetry in the Sunshine State, shows that beauty can be found everywhere in the lonely prairies of Kansas. Esther M. (Clark) Hill "The Call of Kansas," which describes the state of Aroma Shower summer, the wind-swept plains and dusty wild roses, almost makes me want to visit, if only for a minute New York.
